I enjoy meeting art-enthusiasts at the gallery and
on the road at art fairs. Here are answers to the
most frequently-asked questions I receive...

Are you the Artist?
Yes, I am the photographer. I took all the
images you see here.

Did you take all these pictures?
See answer to number 1.

Did you go to all these places?
See answer to number 1.

What kind of camera do you use?
To quote an old saying, "cameras don't take pictures,
people take pictures." The type of equipment I use is really
irrelevant. If you saw a bad picture here, would it be the
fault of the camera? Most of the images you see here are the
result of a combination of subject matter, lighting and composition,
and a degree of being at the right place at the right time. Sometimes they are planned,
often they are not. Although I believe these images could be taken with many different types of equipment, I personally use a Mamiya RB67, a Canon A1, and a Calumet 4x5 monorail.

What kind of film do you use?
Since my end result is a print, I prefer to use negative film. Kodak Portra and Fuji NPS are my choices for professional films. Although I have seen fantastic results from transparency film by other photographers, I feel it is more difficult to work with and a higher cost-factor to achieve a final print. Except for the use of haze filters and a polarizer, the use of other filters is used sparingly and only for certain effects to improve an image.

Who does your matting and framing?
I do. For economical purposes, materials such as mat board, frame molding, and glass is purchased in quantity, and then assembled with various types of framing equipment. With this process, the cost of a finished piece of art is kept to a minimum. Differences in pricing is due to the cost of different types of materials used to frame the photograph.

Do you have a shop somewhere?

Yes. In 1999, the Harbor Light Gallery was opened in Port Sanilac, Michigan, 300 feet from the Port Sanilac Lighthouse overlooking Lake Huron. Along with my photographic work, the gallery also features the art and craft work of my wife Cristy, and the work of some other local crafters. We also offer custom framing and design.
